Coast Guard Base Alameda is located within Alameda County in the San Francisco Bay Area. Alameda County’s rich diversity in landscape, culture, industry, and ethnicities is one of its key features. Alameda County’s 738 square miles are home to more than 1.5 million people who live in urban centers (such as Oakland and Berkeley), smaller cities, suburbs, and rural communities.

The 67-acre (27 ha) Coast Guard Island – one of the largest Coast Guard bases on the West Coast – is situated in the historic Brooklyn Basin, now known as Embarcadero Cove. It is within Alameda city limits, and is tied to the mainland via a bridge from Dennison Street in Oakland. The Island is an artificial island within the Oakland Estuary between Oakland and Alameda, California. It is home to several major United States Coast Guard commands and cutters, including the Coast Guard Pacific Area. From 1942 to 1982, the island was the site of the Coast Guard’s recruiting training center (boot camp); enlisting and training hundreds of thousands of Coast Guardsmen including many of the 214,239 who served in the Pacific and European Theaters of World War II.

Approximately 1,500 active-duty personnel and 400 civilian contractors are stationed directly on Coast Guard Base Alameda. Additionally, the facility serves as a broader central hub for nearly 4,000 Coast Guard members stationed across the greater San Francisco Bay Area. The base is home to major regional commands and operational units including PACAREA, Eleventh Coast Guard District, Sector San Francisco, and the National Security Cutters USCGC Bertholf, Waesche, and Stratton.

The Alameda County Office of Education oversees seventeen K–12 school districts and one K–8 district in Alameda County. In all, there are approximately 10,000 teachers serving 225,000 students. The ACOE also services three community college districts with a total enrollment of approximately 55,000 students.

Alameda County is home to the University of California, Berkeley, the flagship campus of the University of California system, and one of the largest and most prestigious research universities in the world.

De-Pave Park is one of several waterfront parks included in the redevelopment of Alameda Point, a decommissioned military base on the East Bay shoreline that will become a mixed-use community serving the public. De-Pave Park is noteworthy for its nature-forward, restrained design approach employing material recycling, balanced grading, and the introduction of an expansive intertidal marsh. The marsh will transform the large, paved airstrip into an ecological park that welcomes sea level rise. As sea levels rise, wetlands will become inundated, resulting in more sub-tidal habitats. This project is a model for parklands to be planned to create more future wetlands by thinking about landscapes as transitional – allowing natural forces to change landscapes over time to create a resilient waterfront. By restoring nature and engaging the Bay, De-Pave Park is an ecologically productive landscape for native wildlife and a recreational and educational resource for the local community.

The Bay Area Ridge Trail (shortened as Ridge Trail) is a multi-use trail along the hill and mountain ridgelines surrounding the Bay Area, including Alameda. It is planned to extend 550 miles (890 km); As of May 2025, 427 miles (687 km) have been completed. When finished, the trail will connect over 75 parks and open spaces. The trail is designed for use by hikers, runners, mountain bicyclists, and equestrians. It is intended to be accessible through trailheads near major population centers, but the trail extends into more remote areas, too.

The Ridge Trail’s sister trail, the San Francisco Bay Trail, will run along the bay shore of all San Francisco Bay-adjacent counties, including Alameda. It will comprise a massive 500 miles (800kms) of trail by foot or by wheel through 47 cities, across 7 toll bridges, along shorelines, BBQ spots, over 130 parks, remote locations and much more! As of 2020, 356 miles of the trail have been completed.
